The Forum Presents: Karen Seneferu, Artist and Curator

Visual artist Karen Seneferu is founder and co-curator of the "The Black Woman is God" multi-media visual and spiritual exhibition. With over 150 Black women from the African diaspora who are painters, sculptors, film makers, and performance artists, the exhibition challenges Western cultural narratives of God being white and male. Through the examination of cosmology, womanhood, feminism, politics and psychology, "The Black Woman is God" reveals the fragments in art history and culture that posit Black art as only ancient or contemporary, only white and male, failing to honor the vast spaces in between.

Karen Seneferu is a self-taught artist that was born and raised in Oakland California. She received a BA in English from University of California, Berkeley. Interested in how individuals can be a part of mainstream society andmaintain cultural integrity, Seneferu created a program that removed fear andanxiety for Foundational Students called Take Flight at Berkeley City College, where she teaches. The program incorporates art, technology, reading, writing and gallery visits. At the center of the program is the idea that narrative is art and art is narrative.

Karen Seneferu is presenting at the CSUEB Forum as part of the BLACK SPECULATIVE ARTS MOVEMENT #BSAMoakland2017 event at CSU East Bay on May 13 and the Minority Reports, 2054 Game Jam Event on May 12 through May 14, 2017
